Robot Vacuum Buying Guide: Navigation, Floors, Pet Hair and What to Check

Updated October 30, 2026 · Appliance Den buying guide

Short answer: a robot vacuum is a helper for regular touch-ups, not a replacement for a full-size vacuum. The things that matter most are how well it navigates your home (and avoids cords and clutter), how it cleans your floors (bare floors vs carpet, pet hair), how low it is to fit under furniture, how much upkeep it needs (dustbin size, brush rolls that tangle, an auto-empty base), and how well the maker protects the data it collects about your home.

What a robot vacuum can and can’t do

Robot vacuums aren’t as powerful as upright or canister vacuums, which are still better at deep-cleaning carpets and hard floors. Where they shine is keeping floors tidy between deep cleans, on a schedule, with little attention. You will still need to pick clothes, toys, cables and other clutter up off the floor before a run, and many homes keep a regular vacuum for the deep clean.

What to compare, and why it matters

FeatureWhy it mattersWhat to look for
Navigation and mappingGood navigators cover more of the floor, get out of tight spots and avoid cords and rug fringeRoom mapping in the app, no-go zones, obstacle avoidance, the ability to learn your layout over repeat runs
Floor typesMany models clean bare floors far better than carpetStrong carpet results if you have a lot of rugs; easy transitions between floor types
Pet hairHair wraps around brush rolls and clogs small binsTangle-resistant brushes, a bin that is easy to empty
HeightA taller robot gets stuck under sofas and beds, or can’t reach under themMeasure the gap under your lowest furniture and compare it with the robot’s height
Dustbin and auto-empty baseA small bin needs emptying after almost every runA larger bin, or a self-emptying base (check whether it uses bags you have to buy)
Ease of useSmall chores add upA carry handle, an easy-to-clean brush roll, scheduling, and a robot that doesn’t scatter debris
Data privacy and securityMapping robots know your floor plan, and some have camerasClear privacy settings, the option to delete maps, regular security updates

The features summarized from what Consumer Reports tests (carpet, bare floor, navigation, ease of use, data privacy and security), “Best Robot Vacuums of 2026”, read October 30, 2026. The “what to look for” column is our own advice.

Navigation types, in plain English

  • Laser (lidar) mapping: a small spinning sensor maps the room; it tends to make neat, efficient rows and works in the dark.
  • Camera-based: uses a camera to map and, on many models, to recognize objects like socks and cables; it may need some light, and it raises more privacy questions.
  • Basic bump-and-turn: cleans in a more random pattern and takes longer to cover a room; the simplest option for a small space.

Vacuum only, or vacuum and mop?

Combo robots that vacuum and mop in one machine are now common. They suit homes with lots of hard floor, but they add tanks, pads and sometimes a cleaning base to look after. If most of your home is carpet, a vacuum-only robot keeps things simpler. Whichever you choose, budget for replacement brushes, filters and (for self-emptying bases) bags over time; see our robot vacuum parts.
